To become a mobile crane operator in Spain, you must meet certain requirements and possess specific skills, including:
- Minimum age: Be at least 18 years old.
- Basic education: Have completed secondary education (or an equivalent qualification recognised for employment purposes).
- Health and physical condition: Be in good health and have adequate vision to operate heavy machinery safely.
- Specialised training: Complete a certified mobile crane operator course that includes classroom-based learning, simulator training and practical operation of real cranes.

Types of mobile crane operator licence
In Spain, there are two categories of Mobile Crane Operator Licence, Category A and Category B, depending on the lifting capacity of the crane to be operated.
Category A Licence
- Authorises the operation of self-propelled mobile cranes with a maximum lifting capacity of up to 130 tonnes.
- It is the standard qualification for most operators beginning their careers in the construction or industrial sectors.
- Requires completion of a theoretical and practical training course and successful completion of the official examination regulated by the Government of Catalonia.
Category B Licence
- Authorises the operation of self-propelled mobile cranes with a lifting capacity exceeding 130 tonnes.
- Previous experience or possession of a Category A Licence is generally required.
- Includes advanced specialist training for the safe and responsible operation of high-capacity cranes.
Both licence categories ensure that operators meet current industrial safety regulations, enabling the legal and professional operation of mobile cranes on construction sites and in industrial environments.
Each licence requires completion of the corresponding mobile crane operator training course.
