Requirements to become a mobile crane operator
To operate a mobile crane, candidates must meet several basic requirements established by current regulations. The most important include:
- Be at least 18 years old, which is the legal minimum age in Spain.
- Hold a Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) certificate or an equivalent qualification recognised for employment purposes.
- Have the necessary physical and mental fitness to operate the machinery safely and accurately. In many cases, an official medical certificate is required.
- Obtain the official Mobile Crane Operator Licence after successfully completing the required theoretical and practical training.
- Receive Occupational Risk Prevention (PRL) training, particularly for the construction and industrial sectors.
- Professional Competence Certificate (CAP). Although not always mandatory, it may be required if the role also involves transporting heavy vehicles on public roads.

Type A mobile crane operator licence
The Type A mobile crane operator licence is the basic qualification and authorises the holder to operate self-propelled mobile cranes with a maximum lifting capacity of up to 130 tonnes. To obtain this licence, candidates must:
- Successfully complete an approved theoretical and practical training course.
- Pass the official examination.
- Demonstrate the required physical and psychological fitness.
This licence is ideal for those starting their career in the sector or working with lower-capacity cranes. It is widely required for medium-sized construction projects and industrial operations.
Type B mobile crane operator licence
The Type B mobile crane operator licence authorises operators to work with mobile cranes with a lifting capacity of more than 130 tonnes and is intended for larger and more complex lifting operations. The requirements are more demanding:
- Hold a Type A licence or demonstrate equivalent experience.
- Complete more advanced theoretical and practical training.
- Pass a more comprehensive official examination.
These cranes are typically used on major construction projects, infrastructure developments and industrial installations where large and heavy loads must be handled with precision.
