The Santa Eulàlia Schooner

Over the weekend of 7–9 October 2022, the “Orígens” festival was held in La Ràpita.

../…

Orígens is a celebration of La Ràpita’s recent past, bringing it back to life and interpreting it through the people of the town themselves. The story of La Ràpita, told by its own residents for both locals and visitors.

Over the course of one weekend, the event highlights the town’s unique economic and social character at the beginning of the 20th century. These distinctive features are represented by two main social groups: fishermen and sailors on the one hand, and the agricultural and livestock communities on the other, together with everything that revolved around them.

Docked in the port for the occasion was the Santa Eulàlia Schooner, a century-old three-masted sailing vessel that forms part of the fleet of the Barcelona Maritime Museum.

She was built in 1918 on the beach at Torrevieja (Alicante) by the shipowner Pascual Flores, who named her Carmen Flores after his daughter.

In 1919, she received her Navigation Certificate, and in 1921 she made her first voyage to the Americas, sailing from Alicante to Manzanillo and Santiago de Cuba.

After changing ownership several times and sailing under different names, she was retired from service in 1996. In 1997, she was acquired by the Barcelona Maritime Museum, which carried out a complete restoration between 1998 and 1999 to return her to her original appearance before adding her to its collection.

In 2000, the schooner returned to the water under the new name Santa Eulàlia, in honour of Barcelona’s co-patron saint.

And why are we telling you all this?

Because both the lifting of the Santa Eulàlia out of the water and her relaunch were made possible thanks to the teamwork between one of our DEMAG AC300 cranes and a crane from Grúas JJ S.A.

The DEMAG AC300 was a six-axle crane (6 × 12,000 kg) equipped with a 59 m boom and two jib configurations, reaching maximum hook heights of 67.7 m (59.0 + 10.7 m) and 80.7 m (59.0 + 21.7 m).

Teamwork divides the task and multiplies the results.
